Homilies :: Latin Rite
Tuesday of the 32nd Week in Ordinary Time Download This Homily

Wis 2: 23--3: 7

Ps 33: 2-3, 16-17, 18-19

Lk 17: 7-10

Jesus wants to tell us that we should not consider us righteous even if we are following the commandments of Jesus in our life. Our attitude should be that of St. Paul who says in I Cor. 9:16 “Yet when I preach the gospel, I cannot boast, for I am compelled to preach.  Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel.” After having done everything rightly we should have an attitude that I have just done only what is my duty. Some times when we do things better we start boasting or looking down upon others for not doing things as we do. Jesus precisely wants to tell us this need not be the case. We should do things better and it should inspire others to also do it similarly. When we start condemning others for not doing it as we do, it becomes a bit too much. Even after having done everything better,  our attitude should be that we are only the humble servants of the Lord to be used by the Lord as he wants. This humility and simplicity will be well received and become a source of inspiration for others. And the fact if we are able to do certain things better it is only because of the grace of the Lord. If the grace of the Lord is not there then we will be not able to do things as good as we are doing it now.  Usually it is said about the charismatic groups and persons that they find fault with others for not following their footsteps, for they consider that what they do is the best thing to happen. If this attitude is with us, we would do better to overcome this. There are very many different ways to follow the footsteps of the Lord. Whatever we do we should ask the Lord if it is what he wants us to do. And if we get a positive response from the Lord, and then we need not be worried that it is not being accepted or recognized by  others.
