Wis 6; 1-11

Ps 81; 3-4, 6-7

Lk 17: 11-19

We see that Jesus underlines the need to be grateful. We all know that the best giving is thanksgiving. And yet many times we are rather too narrow minded that we do not express gratitude for the assistance received, especially if it is from familiar and people from lower strata of life than us.

See it was the law of the Jews that if one gets cured of leprosy they should show up themselves to the priest to be testified- Leviticus 14:7- that they can be welcomed back to their own community from which they were segregated due to this dreaded decease. The one who had come back to Jesus was a Samaritan who did not have to show up to the priests as the rules of Leviticus was not for Samaritans, but he chose to come to Jesus and praise and thank him for the great healing he got. He recognized Jesus as God and praised him. This is what Jesus was demanding from others that they too recognize Jesus as God and praise and thank him, which the nine Jews who had got healing failed to do. With this Jesus is a sort of establishing that he is God and we should adore, praise and thank him for the great things he has done for us.

We receive a great variety of gifts and graces from the Lord and many times we take it for granted and fail to show our gratitude and praise and thank him. We need to be more sensitive in this regard and express our gratefulness whenever we get graces and blessings from the Lord.

One man came to a Christian orphanage cum old age home run by a Catholic priest and reached his father there. There were different options of rooms like ac, non ac etc. The father said that there was no need to bother about it. He would mange everything. In between he got a phone call from his wife suggesting to tell his father that he does not need to come home for celebrations like Christmas or Easter or the like. By then the Father Director of the old age home came there and had a chat with the old man who was to be admitted to the old age home.  When the son saw them both talking very familiarly he enquired the priest if he knew his father earlier. The priest said that he had come to the orphanage 30 years ago to adopt a boy child. The son who was an adopted son did not even know that he was an orphan but was adopted by this great man whom he was confining to the old age home. This can be exceptional case of ingratitude.
