Homilies :: Latin Rite

2 Mc 7: 1. 20-31

Ps 17: 1bcd. 5-6. 8b and 15

Lk 19: 11-28

After listening to the story of the gold coins straight from the lips of Jesus, the first thought in the minds of some us could be, ‘this is an incomplete story because it does not address me.’ Some of us find ourselves left out from the story because we cannot identify ourselves with the ones who returned with ten gold coins or five. Worse still, nor even with the one who returned with the one coin that was safely but unproductively locked in the pit. For example, I might wonder in despair: ‘where is that gold coin of the Spirit-inspired resolve I had at the time of my marriage? – to begin a new life with my partner a new life of complete fidelity, sharing, understanding and communication. After sailing through the sea of marital life for years, made turbulant by strains of financial troubles, health problems, temptations at work place and lure of the media, I have landed at an island of life with not much to celebrate. I have long forgotten the gold coin that I had once treasured. We might have similar agonizing thoughts about our resolves about our study, work, etc.

Shall we continue to despair? Not at all! Think of David of the Old Testament. He was the one of whom God said, ‘he is someone after my own heart!’ From that height of grace, he had fallen to the pit of sin. From the depth of darkness, he called up God again. And he walked back to God’s light with greater resolve. Let us pray, ‘Lord, grant me a coin yet more and let me start once again.’
