Homilies :: Latin Rite
Thursday of the 33rd week in Ordinary Time Download This Homily

1 Mc 2: 15-29

Ps 50: 1b-2. 5-6. 14-15

Lk 19: 41-44.

The more refined the fuel is, the greater its power to move. Kerosene is not used to power the engine of a vehicle; diesel is. Diesel is not used to power the engines of an aircraft. That would need a still finer fuel.

Faith is like fuel. The finer it is, farther we go in life and nobler will be the purpose we seek in life. All the ten lepers of the Gospel story today had faith. Faith strong enough to cry out in unison, “Jesus! Master! Take pity on us!” Their faith was strong enough to move Jesus to respond and all of them got cured. But the faith of nine among them could not take them beyond their prayer. Their faith met its goal when they received the favour of good health. But the tenth man had a still finer faith, which propelled his steps to return to the Lord to thank, and, may be, later on, to live a life of endless gratitude and service.

Is my faith so feeble that it just moves my heart to turn to God and my lips to say a prayer when I am in a dire need? Or, is my faith finer that it propels my feet to reach out those in need and my hands to give?

“Not everyone who calls me ‘Lord, Lord’ will enter the Kingdom of heaven, but only those who do what my Father in heaven wants them to do.”

Fr. George Kulangra CMI
