1 Mc 4: 3-37. 52-59

1 Chr 29: 10bcd. 11abc. 11d-12a. 12bcd

Lk 19: 45-48

For any Jew, the Temple at Jerusalem was the holiest of the holy places on the face of the earth. So they flocked to it in thousands to worship. There they prayed, some singing psalms and some in silence; some dropping coins into offering boxes; some shedding tears; some making new resolutions. Right in the midst of all these, a business thrived with all its ugly features: greed, deception, dirt, insensitivity and so on. Nobody seemed to bother. It was as if for them there was nothing that was not OK. The only thing that mattered in spiritual life was some moments with God to appease him to dole out some favours or to relieve one’s heart from some burdens.

In short, it was a life of many compromises. They had compromised with every sort of possible evils in society, like corruption, greed, filth, noise and insensitivity towards one’s fellow beings.

The very uncommon sight of a very angry Jesus with a whip in his hand should force us to take a very close look at our heart and our attitudes in life. If I have compromised with dirt and evil and self-seeking, I have become a desecrated temple.

Fr. George Kulangra CMI
