Homilies :: Latin Rite

1 Mc 6: 1-13

Ps 9: 2-3. 4 and 6. 16 and 19

Lk 20: 27-40

A common folly we commit is to think of heaven as an extension and prolongation of the best of the experiences in this world. So in heaven we anticipate some of the most happy and beautiful people and experiences we have encountered here. When we so think, heaven becomes easily predictable and a creation of our own imagination. As a result it loses the power to convert our hearts. Many people in the Gospels who encountered Jesus, immediately changed course and walked the path along with Jesus, leaving their families, their profession, their villages and so on. It was because they were swept off their feet by what they experienced with Jesus, which they had not at all anticipated earlier and which they were not even prepared for. For example, after a miraculous catch of fish in the waters, Peter turned to Jesus and “recognized” him. The result: ‘Get away from me, Lord!’, he cried out. The divine glow he now saw on the face of the Lord overwhelmed him and filled with his mind with a sense of total unworthiness.

‘There is no marrying in heaven,’ says Jesus. It means, in order to become worthy of heaven, we need to shed many of our preconceptions, attitudes and expectations, ideologies and insistences. In other words, we need to make an act of self-surrender. That would bring us closer to heaven.
