Dan 1: 1-6. 8-20

 Ps Dan 3: 52. 53. 54. 55. 56

 Lk 21: 1-4

THE WIDOW’S OFFERING

One day a king decided to find and honor the greatest person among his subjects. Many people came forward and presented their offering of wealth, time, talents and discoveries. There were the wealthy people who contributed lakhs and crores, there were persons possessing healing power who did miraculous activities, there were great scientists, etc. it was almost impossible to choose the most generous one from among them. Finally an old widow came and stood before the king. “Who is this?” the king asked someone said “you have seen and heard all the others, this is their teacher”. “She has dedicated her whole life to teaching students”. The people applauded and the king came down from his throne and crown and honour her.

In today’s gospel we see Jesus observing the people who put money in the temple treasury. It was customary that the Jews contribute money for the maintenance of the Jerusalem Temple. Jesus noticed a poor widow who put in two copper coins. In the eye of the people her offering was unimportant. But Jesus praised her and said that poor widow had put in more than all the others who contributed to the treasury. The others contributed from their abundances, but she put in everything she had, her whole living. It is not the amount one gives that matters but the love with which one gives. Give with a generous heart and joyful mind.

The widow is an example of generosity, piety and fear of God. Her sincere act will be praised from generation to generation because she made her offering at a great sacrifice. She knew that her love for God’s house had to be expressed by a gift. Genuine offering involves loss and sacrifice. The woman was ready to undergo pain in order to gain eternal reward.
