PREDICTING TEMPLE’S DESTRUCCTION

In the gospel we find Jesus predicting the distraction of the Jerusalem Temple. The Jerusalem Temple was the centre of Jewish religion and cult. Temple and Torah were the two great pillars of the Jewish religion. Jerusalem and the Temple were considered at the center of the world. Often people came to the temple for prayer and worship.

During the time of great feasts worshippers came to in large numbers. Every Jewish male staying within fifteen miles of Jerusalem was obliged to participate in the Passover feast. The people went to the temple also for the purpose of sacrifice. The sacrificial animals were sold on the temple side. This prompted Jesus to cleanse the temple and to send out those who were selling the sacrificial animals. It disturbed the peaceful and prayerful atmosphere of the house of God. Later the prophecy came true predicting the distraction of the Jerusalem Temple. During the war between the Jews and Romans (66-70 AD) Jerusalem and the Temple were destroyed. Now the Jerusalem temple is no longer the dwelling place of God. It is in the human heart that God dwells.

Jesus also speaks about the persecution that his followers will have to undergo in his absence. He foretells their suffering so that they should not lose their faith when the persecution actually comes. He tells the disciples that the one who endures to the end will be saved. So each worshipper is obliged to clean and purify his or heart. We need not be worried about the future. Live in the present and in the presence and providence of God.
