Teaching about the Last Things
The disciples approached privately to get clarifications about his predictions. Jesus and his disciples’ usually met in a private place for teachings of particular gravity. This time he spoke to them about the last things. He predicts the terrible things that will happen before the end of the world and reminds them to be careful so that no one leads them astray. Enemies of God are looking for a chance to lead people on the wrong path. Hence one has to depend upon the providence of God and the teaching of Jesus.
Jesus speaks about the persecution that his followers will have to undergo in his absence. He foretells their suffering so that they should not lose their faith when the persecution actually comes. He tells the disciples that the one who endures to the end will be saved. The disciples and followers will have to undergo persecution from the community and from external forces. There will be calamities, famine, wars, rumors of war etc, admits all these one has to be patient. There is no need of fear and confusion about the end. One has to remain confident and hopeful because God is directing human history. We need not be worried about the future. Live in the present and in the presence and providence of God.
“Anxity is the rust of life, destroying its brightness and weakening its power. A child like and abiding trust in God’s providence is its best preventive and remedy” (Tryson Edwards).
