Invite the Untouchables so that you may be touched by the Lord

Today St. Paul is reminding us to be united in Christ and complete the joy-to be in Christ, to be in the level of Joy. A joy that won’t be taken away by any external forces!

Every celebration is an occasion of joy. While taking a dinner at the house of a Pharisee we find Jesus closely observing the invited guests. Finding that except himself all are well-to-do people of the locality who can make a complementary invitation and one way ‘file the returns’. Jesus is instructing his audience not to invite such big shots for any dinner they offer but prefer the poor and the least.

There is a standing invitation from the Lord, “Come to me all who are tired and carrying great burdens….and I will give you consolation.” (Mt 11; 28) The people who are in the creamy-layer of the Society do not know the real value of food.  For them all these dinners are signs of social status and symbol. They go there with all their egos exposed. In all the ‘parties’ offered or ‘thrown’ we find the society ladies and men in blue make a lot of gossip, and try their level best to show off better than others. Every time you are invited to such gatherings you are expected to carry costly gifts and invite the host for another ‘bada khana’ (Dinner) in return some time or other.

Now the gospel of the day is challenging us to be different. Jesus is instructing his real followers to invite those ‘tom, dick and harry’ who won’t be able invite you back whenever you ‘throw’ a dinner. Jesus declared so with a definite purpose. Only the hungry knows the real value of food. When you offer a bowl of food or two dry breads to a hungry man you can see his eyes shining… That is the light which will illumine your ways. That will enrich your lives…. Thank God for all poor and hungry of this world from where you get a glance of the poor Jesus of Nazareth.

Today the Church is remembering a great saint of the poor, St. Martin de Pores who devoted his entire life and caliber for the poor and afflicted, even animals and insects. It is worth reflecting on Jesus’ teaching on inviting the ‘unwanted’ to our dining rooms after the example of St. Martin. They will bring in the grace of God for you. Amen!
