Ps 50: 8-9. 16bc-17. 21 and 23

Gospel MK 2:18-22

The disciples of John and of the Pharisees were accustomed to fast. People came to Jesus and objected, "Why do the disciples of John and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?" Jesus answered them, "Can the wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them?
As long as they have the bridegroom with them they cannot fast. But the days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast on that day. No one sews a piece of unshrunken cloth on an old cloak. If he does, its fullness pulls away, the new from the old, and the tear gets worse. Likewise, no one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the wine will burst the skins, and both the wine and the skins are ruined. Rather, new wine is poured into fresh wineskins."

Fasting

Fasting is considered to be one of the important aspects of spiritual life. All the great sages had used it very effectively to reach greater depths in their spiritual life. It seems that Jesus has a different take on fast as just a means to spirituality. In his scheme of things, what is important is not just some rituals but entirely a new system of values where love is the most important value. He tells that there is no point in just adding some new things to the old rotten custom but the need is for whole new brand of values and practices. A patch up of new piece of cloth to the old may widen the tear. Similarly the new wine cannot be kept in old wine skin lest the new wine may burst the old wine skin. The new value system he has come with needs to be tried out in its entirety not just in bits and pieces.  Here, what is significant, is not just the rituals and customs but the motive behind it. All the rituals and customs should be hinged on the broad value of love.

Fasting and prayer are important when one finds that s/he is away from Jesus and his value system. If one is steadily moving ahead in Jesus’ attitudes and values the lack of fasting and prayer may not be a big issue. But if one finds that one is drifting away from Jesus, s/he would need to hold on to fasting and prayer so that s/he may get back to Him. May be one of the dilemmas of the present age is its reluctance to give up the old rituals and customs to embrace the brand of Jesus’ value system in its fullness. And this is what Jesus is demanding from his disciples and followers.
