1 Sm 24: 3-21

Ps 57: 2. 3-4. 6 and 11

Gospel MK 3:13-19

Jesus went up the mountain and summoned those whom he wanted and they came to him. He appointed Twelve, whom he also named Apostles, that they might be with him and he might send them forth to preach and to have authority to drive out demons: He appointed the Twelve: Simon, whom he named Peter; James, son of Zebedee, and John the brother of James, whom he named Boanerges, that is, sons of thunder; Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus; Thaddeus, Simon the Cananean, and Judas Iscariot who betrayed him.

The Twelve

Jesus selects twelve disciples from among his followers to be with him and to send out. Jesus authorizes his apostles to do three things: preach, heal sickness, and cast out devils. These are the three things which Jesus has been doing himself, so he is entrusting them with continuing his mission. To be with him is the training. After that their mission is to cast out and cure. Their mission is to cast out the evil from the society and to heal. To be with him always they have to be like the branches of the wine united with the wine. Then only they will bear fruits in their mission.

The most distinguishing element in all the twelve is that they were all ordinary. . They are perfectly ordinary men in every way. Not one of them is renowned for scholarship. Not one of them is renowned for erudition. None of them had a track record as an orator or some kind of theologian. They were outsiders, total outsiders from the religious establishment of Jesus' day. They didn't have any particular natural talents. They don't appear to have any particular intellectual talents. They weren't highly educated. They were, on the other hand, prone to mistakes and misunderstandings and bad attitudes and lapses of faith and bitter failure.

But Jesus selected them. They're going to be the foundation of the church, the Apostles, the foundation of the church and it all depends on twelve men whose most notable characteristic is that they were just plain ordinary men. He uses imperfect vessels. In the Old Testament we see God calling just ordinary people to be leaders and prophets. From Moses onwards we see many selected ones confessing their inefficiency to carry out the mission. But God empowers them with His power. Jesus too tells his disciples not to worry what to speak, Holy Spirit will guide them.

In the mission entrusted to us, it is not our efficiency or talents but in the Spirit we have to depend. But for that we have to be with him as the branches are united to the wine. Then we shall be bearing fruits.
