As you go, proclaim this message: ‘The kingdom of heaven has come near.’  Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy,[a]drive out demons. Freely you have received; freely give.


 “Do not get any gold or silver or copper to take with you in your belts—no bag for the journey or extra shirt or sandals or a staff, for the worker is worth his keep.  Whatever town or village you enter, search there for some worthy person and stay at their house until you leave. As you enter the home, give it your greeting.  If the home is deserving, let your peace rest on it; if it is not, let your peace return to you.

 

Purpose of Life

( Feast of St. Barnabas, Apostle )

 

Pope Francis recently canonised 800 Italians  who had refused to abandon their faith on the face of death by the Muslim invaders. Speaking on the occasion, the Pope said, “We need models who value faith more than the comforts of this life on earth.” The people of Kandhamal of Orissa who were persecuted and killed a few years ago also tell the same story of holding on to faith in spite of life threats.


On this day when we celebrate the feast of St. Barrnabas, the million dollar question in front of us is this, “why people preferred death to abandoning faith?” The answer is simple; they knew the purpose of life. Catechism of Catholic Church teaches us that the purpose of life is to know God, love Him and to reach heaven doing good. In short, to have union with God is the ultimate purpose of human life.


Remembering this purpose of life, Barnabas and other apostles could face the challenges and sufferings they had in proclaiming the Word of God. It is the awareness of this purpose that helped disciples not to be anxious as they set out to preach even though they had no gold, or silver in their belts, no bag for their journey, or tow tunics, or sandals, or even a staff to chase of the wild animals on the way.


Do I hold this purpose of life above all the trivialities of life?


Do I still work for the perishable things (Jn 6:27) instead of working for fulfilling the purpose of life? If so, let us renew this conviction that the purpose of our life is to have union with God.
