2 Corinthians 3:4-11 ;

Psalm 99:5-9;

Gospel MT 5:17-19

Jesus said to his disciples:
"Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets.
I have come not to abolish but to fulfill.
Amen, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away,
not the smallest letter or the smallest part of a letter
will pass from the law,
until all things have taken place.
Therefore, whoever breaks one of the least of these commandments
and teaches others to do so
will be called least in the Kingdom of heaven.
But whoever obeys and teaches these commandments
will be called greatest in the Kingdom of heaven."

Perfect it with love

The Pharisees were very strict to the Laws they had. Jesus had tough time in dealing with these people who kept the law only in its letter, not in spirit. But, analysing the incidents in the gospels where Jesus criticises Pharisees, one may be wrong to draw conclusion that Jesus was against the laws. On the contrary, Jesus says, “Until heaven and earth pass away, not one letter will pass from the law.” In fact, Jesus was trying to perfect the laws that were written thousands of years before, instead of breaking them.

In Mt 5: 21-23 Jesus says ‘You have heard that you should not kill. But I say to you that you shoul not even get angry with others.’ In Mt 5:27,28 Jesus says ‘You have heard that you should not commit adultery. But I say to you not to look a man or woman with lust.’

Jesus perfected each law adding love to it. That is why the woman caught in adultery experienced the love and not the harshness of law.

 In the first reading, Paul refers to a covenant that is essentially written on the heart, not on stone tablets. Heart again is the symbol of love.

Each one of us is called to be perfect as heavenly Father is perfect (Mt 5:48). In order to be perfect, we must perfect the laws with which we live. Neither the namesake following of the Ten Commandments, nor the faithfulness to the civil laws makes us perfect. We must need to add love to them as Jesus did.

Let us spend time today in reflecting over the commandments of God and rules of society and ask ourselves  ‘how far we were able to add love to them in observing them.
