2 Corinthians 5:14-21 ;

 Psalm 103:1-4, 9-12;

 Gospel MT 5:33-37

Jesus said to his disciples:
"You have heard that it was said to your ancestors,
Do not take a false oath,
but make good to the Lord all that you vow.
But I say to you, do not swear at all;
not by heaven, for it is God's throne;
nor by the earth, for it is his footstool;
nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King.
Do not swear by your head,
for you cannot make a single hair white or black.
Let your 'Yes' mean 'Yes,' and your 'No' mean 'No.'
Anything more is from the Evil One."

 Integrity is a Necessity

If one visits the government offices in Delhi, one can see many Christians working there. The Heads of the offices appreciate the work of these people saying, “The Christians are hardworking, peace loving and better disciplined.” We can take these comments as a pat on our back. But we have to ask ourselves the question that ‘Do we have the integrity in life that surpasses all other people?”

At the time of Jesus, it was a practice among the Israelites to swear or to take oath for any thing in life. Those who swear and take oath were considered to be trustworthy people. But at the same time, Jews had the habit of inserting various clauses in the oath statement so that they could be exempted from fulfilling these oaths. Jesus was referring to it in today’s Gospel passages.

The message of Jesus is clear that there should be a deep integrity between what we speak and what we do. During the trial of Jesus, people had accused him of many misdeeds. But they could not substantiate it as the acts of Jesus were perfectly integrated with the message of love that he preached.

In today’s society, the integrity is not held high. Therefore we see great difference between what we pray in the chapel and what we do just after getting out of the chapel. When someone asks our prayers, we naturally say that we will do and later forget it. When we say ‘Jai Yesu’ or ‘Praise the Lord’ we rarely mean praising God. When we recite ‘Our Father’ we don’t mean all what is said in it.  Integrity in small things can help us to keep integrity in great things.

The integrity must be a necessity in our life. Because St. Paul in today’s second reading reminds us that we are the ambassadors for Christ. Ambassadors must do the works of the one who sent them.  If Christ had lived a life of integrity in his thoughts, words, and deeds, we must also embrace this virtue.
