Friday of the Sixteenth Week in Ordinary Time

Ex 20:1-17,

Gospel MT 13:18-23

Jesus said to his disciples: "Hear the parable of the sower. The seed sown on the path is the one who hears the word of the Kingdom without understanding it, and the Evil One comes and steals away what was sown in his heart. The seed sown on rocky ground is the one who hears the word and receives it at once with joy. But he has no root and lasts only for a time. When some tribulation or persecution comes because of the word, he immediately falls away. The seed sown among thorns is the one who hears the word, but then worldly anxiety and the lure of riches choke the word and it bears no fruit. But the seed sown on rich soil is the one who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and yields a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold."

 Yielding Harvest Hundredfold

As a matter of fact, the Ten Commandments are practical applications or the amplification of the one and only divine law which is nothing other than God’s own being – love. Unfortunately the Jewish experts in due course enlarged and multiplied those Ten Commandments into hundreds of rules and regulations making them ridiculous and meaningless, incongruous with the original purpose and intention of God. That is precisely the reason why Jesus had to restore and reinstate the primordial divine law to its original purity and clarity. We are living in a world of rules and regulations. Most people not even care to think why they abide by certain laws and restrictions. They obey them like sheep. Their instinct tells them that it is safer to be a part of the herd and follow the shepherd. They hate the prophets who appeal them to think before they act. As I often say, for most people their brain is an uncalled-for appendage which they are forced to carry around. Usually leaders discourage their followers from using their brains. Generally people enjoy being spoon-fed and prefer to be told what to do. It is this sheepish mindset of people that leaders exploit and manipulate for their own advantage.

God has sown his blessings upon each and every one of us. It is now up to us to decide how to respond. We can keep our hearts hard like rock so that even if the blessings we received spring into sight, slowly they shrivel due to our unsociability. The blessings received by those who are always in search better pastures allow their talents to be crushed under foot. The talents received by those who always compare themselves with others waste their energy and time by being judgmental and critical of everybody else. Only those who are humble and grateful will have time to multiply their talents thirty, sixty or hundred fold making use of the available opportunities. Our talents are given to us not for safe keeping but for utilization. As St Ignatius of Loyola and his fellow Jesuits would say, our vocation and purpose in life is AMDG (Ad Majora Dei Gloriam) – for the greater glory of God. Our success and failure in life is entirely dependent on our openness, availability and cooperation with the divine love.
