Friday of the 27th Week in the Ordinary Time

Gal 3: 7-14,

Gospel LK 11:15-26

When Jesus had driven out a demon, some of the crowd said: "By the power of Beelzebul, the prince of demons, he drives out demons." Others, to test him, asked him for a sign from heaven. But he knew their thoughts and said to them, "Every kingdom divided against itself will be laid waste and house will fall against house. And if Satan is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? For you say that it is by Beelzebul that I drive out demons.

If I, then, drive out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your own people drive them out?

Therefore they will be your judges. But if it is by the finger of God that I drive out demons, then the Kingdom of God has come upon you. When a strong man fully armed guards his palace, his possessions are safe. But when one stronger than he attacks and overcomes him, he takes away the armor on which he relied and distributes the spoils. Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.

"When an unclean spirit goes out of someone, it roams through arid regions searching for rest but, finding none, it says, 'I shall return to my home from which I came.' But upon returning, it finds it swept clean and put in order. Then it goes and brings back seven other spirits more wicked than itself who move in and dwell there, and the last condition of that man is worse than the first."

To whom you are united?

‘Divide and rule’ was the policy of foreigners in India. Even today our nation is divided in the name of caste, religion, language and region. Standing united for the noble cause of freedom, our forefathers gave us liberty. But the dividing factors are all active in our nation so that some segments in the society may gain financial and political benefits. Today Jesus is asking us to identify who belongs to Christ who does not so as to follow the ideal Christian living.

People provoked Jesus telling that He is using Satan to heal the satanic afflictions. But Jesus is so stable and retorts the public with deep wisdom that is unparallel. So genuine is the argument of Jesus that the Pharisees fail to withstand.

Now Jesus wants us today to be alert against all kinds of evil practices. Casting out devils from many He proved that men are prone to evil spirits and they have to be followed closely in order to avoid all kinds of insertions. A man who is willing to lead a holy life could always be tempted and tested because of his vicinity to the Lord. Eternal vigilance is required of every spiritual aspirant that he/she can withstand the tempting situations. See how horrible it would be to have 7 devils in a single human being. Jesus, here is speaking about the character changes one might be undergoing in trying to lead a life worthwhile. From eternity evil powers have tried to overpower the human beings. At Eden Adam was tested and he failed, Cain was tested and he too failed....the story continues even today. Many are the stories we hear everyday where onlookers and spectators astonish at the unpredictable behaviour of the accused as they have never ever dreamt that this could happen with this particular man. We may wonder how this simple soul could behave in that manner, how did that boy speak like this, how dare she fled with that man....etc. yes these are possible when we are not alert. One must be able to trace the satanic feelings within when we are forced from inside to act and speak otherwise.

Let’s pray to Holy Spirit that He may enlighten and empower us to lead an ideal life that is pleasing to God and people and always to be prompt to the whisperings of the Spirit and never heed to the evil temptations, Amen!
