Saturday of the 27th Week in the Ordinary Time

Gal 3: 22-29,

 Gospel LK 11:27-28

While Jesus was speaking,
a woman from the crowd called out and said to him,
"Blessed is the womb that carried you
and the breasts at which you nursed."
He replied, "Rather, blessed are those
who hear the word of God and observe it."

  Your Family

You belong to Christ and through him to His dynasty from Abraham, says St. Paul in today’s epistle. See how blessed we are! People merit it great to be belonging to the family of some great and well known people. In the Gospels we find Mother of Jesus and his relatives coming to meet him and He in one way disowns them telling that the people who hear the Word and observes them are his real parents and kin.

Who do people call blessed? They are all people who have worldly wealth, extravaganzas, land and servants, high positions in the Society, famous sons and daughters etc,. But today our Lord is telling us that he measure those who hear and observe the Word as more blessed. This is the same idea presented by St. Paul when he said belonging to Christ is the more pleasant joy and gratification than anything else.  Today people would like to introduce themselves as friends and relatives of big shots in the Society-Politicians, Ministers, Leaders, Sports Stars, Film Stars, and Bishops and so on. No one is interested to be known as the friend of a poor man, a simple peasant, or an ordinary shop keeper in the street, the gate-keeper or anything of that sort. Here is the demand for the real integrity to tell that you belong to this particular family and clan. Jesus told the woman who hailed him and his mother as blessed ones that the real blessedness is highly demanding.

Mrs. Pica, the mother of St. Francis of Assisi, approached her son who was wandering for the love of Jesus to come back to home and lead a ‘normal’ life. Her tears were avoided and unattended by Francis for he had to see the tears of so many and become the consolation for them.  Her neighbours and friends ridiculed her for the attitude of her son towards her. Still she was happy and content that she could understand the inner struggles of Francis. Mary came rushing to Jesus when she heard that He had gone mad, but Jesus confronted her with serenity and peace. The real blessedness in the eyes of Jesus is not that you belong to the family of some great men but rather that you belong to God and God knows you.

Let’s us pray for the courage and conviction to present ourselves as original as we are, Amen!
