Wednesday of the 26 th Week in the Ordinary Time

Job 9:1-12, 14-16

 Psalm 88:10-15

Gospel LK 9:57-62

As Jesus and his disciples were proceeding
on their journey, someone said to him,
"I will follow you wherever you go."
Jesus answered him,
"Foxes have dens and birds of the sky have nests,
but the Son of Man has nowhere to rest his head."
And to another he said, "Follow me."
But he replied, "Lord, let me go first and bury my father."
But he answered him, "Let the dead bury their dead.
But you, go and proclaim the Kingdom of God."
And another said, "I will follow you, Lord,
but first let me say farewell to my family at home."
Jesus answered him, "No one who sets a hand to the plow
and looks to what was left behind is fit for the Kingdom of God."

Discipleship

In today’s gospel the call to discipleship is presented where there are three scenes. In each of the scenes we find that the passage is left incomplete without telling whether the disciple changed their hearts and turned to Jesus or they went back in dejection. One may feel that by being stern in his reply Jesus was being rather rude to them. But it was his style of doing things; he actually was not refusing their willingness to follow them but was making them to realize their true call. We living in this world of mass media we feel that having lots of likes and share be it any media make  ourselves popular and Jesus could actually do this by accepting the disciples but he didn’t do this. His aim was not of becoming powerful but of touching the hearts of the people. Thus by refusing them or counter arguing their requests Jesus was showing them that their true vocation is to give prime importance to the Love for the kingdom of god. This lets them think and thinking makes them wise.
