Saturday of the 31st Week in the Ordinary Time

Phil 4: 10-19

 Gospel LK 16:9-15

Jesus said to his disciples: "I tell you, make friends for yourselves with dishonest wealth, so that when it fails, you will be welcomed into eternal dwellings. The person who is trustworthy in very small matters is also trustworthy in great ones; and the person who is dishonest in very small matters is also dishonest in great ones. If, therefore, you are not trustworthy with dishonest wealth, who will trust you with true wealth? If you are not trustworthy with what belongs to another, who will give you what is yours? No servant can serve two masters. He will either hate one and love the other, or be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon."

The Pharisees, who loved money, heard all these things and sneered at him. And he said to them, "You justify yourselves in the sight of others, but God knows your hearts; for what is of human esteem is an abomination in the sight of God."

Honesty

“Whoever is faithful in a very little is faithful also in much; and whoever is dishonest in a very little is dishonest also in much.”

Honest people are aware of God’s presence at all times. They try to live always an honest life.

Raju failed the 9th class for a second consecutive year. He feared that if he failed a third time, he will be expelled from the school. During the term exams, his friend Narendra offered to help him copy, so that he could secure at least minimum marks to pass. But Raju refused to accept his friend’s offer.

When the result came Raju had failed and Narendra reminded him that if he had availed the chance to copy, he could have passed. But Raju told, “If I had copied and passed, it would haunt me forever in my life, since I would have become dishonest. So I preferred to fail than to be dishonest in my life.”

His class teacher overheard the conversation of the boys. She commended Raju for his choice of honesty and standing for the values in life. Later she narrated the incident to the principal and arranged extra classes for Raju. Through her efforts he passed the other term exams and final exam.

It pays to be Honest! Jesus is challenging us asking us, which will be the choice we make when we are at cross roads and difficult moments? Will we be honest and faithful or will we succumb to the pressures and become unfaithful and dishonest?

It pays to be honest!

Honest people are aware of God’s presence at all times.
