Monday of the 32nd Week in the Ordinary Time

Tit 1:1-9

Gospel LK 17:1-6

Jesus said to his disciples, "Things that cause sin will inevitably occur, but woe to the one through whom they occur. It would be better for him if a millstone were put around his neck and he be thrown into the sea than for him to cause one of these little ones to sin. Be on your guard! If your brother sins, rebuke him; and if he repents, forgive him. And if he wrongs you seven times in one day  and returns to you seven times saying, 'I am sorry,' you should forgive him."

And the Apostles said to the Lord, "Increase our faith." The Lord replied, "If you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you would say to this mulberry tree, 'Be uprooted and planted in the sea,' and it would obey you."

Temptations

The six verses of the Gospel passage deal with the themes of sin, forgiveness and faith. Temptations to sin are bound to happen. We need to have a discerning mind to live impeccably in the world of enticements.

People are tempted by many things. Inordinate desire for wealth, power and pleasure makes people forget nobler values in life such as love, faith, humility and service. Uncontrolled emotions, greed, jealousy and similar passions make people do things against their conscience. Persistence in sin dulls one’s conscience until it becomes totally insensitive to evil and sin. As we read in the letter of St. James (1:14-15), desire conceives and gives birth to sin and when sin is full-grown, gives birth to death.

Jesus condemns severely those who consciously lead others to sin, becoming causes of temptation. Their actions deceive people and their attractive words and displays arouse the fires of desire in guileless minds. Setting bad examples by elders could also mislead the young to bad ways. Therefore, Jesus gives this stern warning: Watch yourselves!

In the teaching of Jesus forgiveness has an important place. Errors are human and they can happen repeatedly. But repentance can erase them. We should not hold back forgiveness from a repentant person, even if that person is a habitual sinner. We have no right to burden a person because of his past; we should set him/her free in view of his/her future.

Unless and until we see things in the light of faith, it is hard to practice the teachings of Jesus, because they contradict many rules of our practical life. Hence we also have to pray with the disciples: “Increase our faith.” Jesus would then assure us that even a small gain of faith in us would work wonders. In order to have such a faith we must decrease and the Lord must increase in us.
