Friday of the 33rd Week in the Ordinary Time

Revelation 10:8-11

 Psalm 119:14, 24, 72, 103, 111, 131

Gospel LK 19:45-48

Jesus entered the temple area and proceeded to drive out those who were selling things, saying to them, “It is written, My house shall be a house of prayer, but you have made it a den of thieves.” And every day he was teaching in the temple area. The chief priests, the scribes, and the leaders of the people, meanwhile, were seeking to put him to death, but they could find no way to accomplish their purpose because all the people were hanging on his words.

God's Wrath is Healing and Curative

Jesus bursting out with anger is not a picture we are not accustomed with. However, today we come across our Lord who gives vent to his anger and anguish without limit. His anger is not against the market and its forces for being profane. His grouse is that the profane is bursting at its seams and sweeping away the sacred with its currents. He is saddened at the sight of the sacred space being trampled upon by the profane.

The temple should be taken for everything sacred in life, be it our spiritual life, values, relationships in the families and society, goal of life, etc. What Jesus saw as the budding trend and tried to nip has bloomed today with full vigour. As far as market is concerned, profit remains its single most goal; resourcefulness in terms of money and power is what gives one respectability; shortcuts to profit cutting down hard work and patience become yardsticks to valuation. These trends from the profane world are making their way to the sacred world today. More than a faith that endures before challenges and trials, we prefer a faith that brings quick solutions; more than a love that forgives and a justice that does not insist on undoing every wrong done to us, we prefer a partnership of equality. Even in traditionally spiritual activities like imparting of knowledge, we create temptations of greed. Will Jesus find the sacred domains of our life and activity sacred enough that he will stay with us and be part of our life and celebrations?
