Tuesday of the 31st Week in the Ordinary Time

Phil 2: 5-11

Gospel LK 14:15-24

One of those at table with Jesus said to him, "Blessed is the one who will dine in the  ingdom of God." He replied to him, "A man gave a great dinner to which he invited many. When the time for the dinner came, he dispatched his servant to say to those invited, 'Come, everything is now ready.' But one by one, they all began to excuse themselves. The first said to him, 'I have purchased a field and must go to examine it; I ask you, consider me excused.' And another said, 'I have purchased five yoke of oxen and am on my way to evaluate them; I ask you, consider me excused.' And another said, 'I have just married a woman, and therefore I cannot come.' The servant went and reported this to his master. Then the master of the house in a rage commanded his servant, 'Go out quickly into the streets and alleys of the town and bring in here the poor and the crippled, the blind and the lame.' The servant reported, 'Sir, your orders have been carried out and still there is room.' The master then ordered the servant, 'Go out to the highways and hedgerows and make people come in that my home may be filled. For, I tell you, none of those men who were invited will taste my dinner.'"

Are You Rejecting Others?

Rejection is something very serious and it really hurts, causes wounds in the hearts. Even God felt hurt, when his invitation was rejected, that is what we feel going through the gospel passage.

One of the beautiful attitude/character Jesus showed was, he never turned down the invitation of anyone for dinner or a party. He went for parties hoisted by even by his so called enemies. He had also bad experiences; still he accepted the invitations and went for it. Great! And think how bad Jesus will feel if he and his Heavenly Father invites for party and the offer is turned down!

When we accept the invitation, it is an expression of showing concern and care for the other. How great to give consideration to others!

Indira Gandhi, our former late Prime Minister was famous for her concern for other parliamentarians. She almost attended all the birthday parties of the party ministers, in spite of her busy schedules, and her concern was famous, and even her mercy was proven  many times, where she offered her shawls even in winter season, when some people did not have a shawl to wear! Great!

Today’s gospel passage reminds us the need to show care and concern for the other, or at least not to reject others. Gospel challenge is to give time, energy for the other. Giving till it hurts as Mother Teresa puts it! So before rejecting a call to help others, think for a while!
