Wednesday of the 31st Week in the Ordinary Time

Phil 2: 12-18

Gospel LK 14:25-33

Great crowds were traveling with Jesus, and he turned and addressed them, "If anyone comes to me without hating his father and mother,  wife and children, brothers and sisters, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple. Which of you wishing to construct a tower does not first sit down and calculate the cost to see if there is enough for its completion?  Otherwise, after laying the foundation and finding himself unable to finish the work the onlookers should laugh at him and say, 'This one began to build but did not have the resources to finish.'  Or what king marching into battle would not first sit down and decide whether with ten thousand troops he can successfully oppose another king advancing upon him with twenty thousand troops?  But if not, while he is still far away, he will send a delegation to ask for peace terms.  In the same way, everyone of you who does not renounce all his possessions cannot be my disciple."

The cost of Discipleship

A choice is before you. Have a candle or have the whole moonlight! Which will you choose?

An incident from the life of Tagore.  He was crossing the river Yamuna by boat. It was night. His intention was to write a poem on river Yamuna. He had a candle. In the candle light he was trying to pen down the poem on Yamuna. But no poetry was flowing to his mind. Finally he put off the candle in frustration. What a surprise, the moment the candlelight went off, moonlight filled the boat and the boat and river appeared beautiful in the moonlight! Tagore experienced a great sense of beauty. At once, poetry began to flow out of his heart...great poetry!

The candle light was capable of hiding the moonlight! The same way, petty ego and our linkages could hide the vast happiness of heart. Discipleship is a call to radical following of the Lord. It is not only in spirit, but even in your daily life!

Once a thief broke into the house of a Buddha Sanyasi in the night. Sanyasi got up hearing the noise. He asked gently, “who is that?”

Thief: “I am a thief”.

Sanyasi: “Why have you come?”

Thief: “I have come in search of some money”

Now the Sanyasi started laughing profusely. Sanyasi could not stop his laughter.

Thief: “why are you laughing?”

Sanyasi: “I was searching the whole house in the bright daylight for a coin, but did not find anything. And how are you going to get one in this dark night? If you are getting it will be miracle. Tell me if you get one! Ha ha”

Cost of discipleship is total renunciation, in spirit and in reality. Jesus challenges, “None of you can become my disciple, if you do not give up all your possessions”
