Thursday of the 31st Week in the Ordinary Time

 Phil 3: 3-8a

Gospel LK 15:1-10

The tax collectors and sinners were all drawing near to listen to Jesus, but the Pharisees and scribes began to complain, saying, "This man welcomes sinners and eats with them."  So Jesus addressed this parable to them. "What man among you having a hundred sheep and losing one of them would not leave the ninety-nine in the desert and go after the lost one until he finds it? And when he does find it, he sets it on his shoulders with great joy and, upon his arrival home, he calls together his friends and neighbors and says to them, 'Rejoice with me because I have found my lost sheep.' I tell you, in just the same way there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous people who have no need of repentance.

"Or what woman having ten coins and losing one would not light a lamp and sweep the house, searching carefully until she finds it? And when she does find it, she calls together her friends and neighbors and says to them, 'Rejoice with me because I have found the coin that I lost.'  In just the same way, I tell you, there will be rejoicing among the angels of God over one sinner who repents."

The Lost Sheep

The catechism teacher asked the children in her catechism class, “In Bible, we have great personalities. Like whom do you want to become?

A child answered:  “I want to become like the Lost Sheep!”

“Like the lost Sheep! Why?” asked the shocked teacher.

Child: The lost sheep was lucky to travel on the shoulders of Jesus. When the sheep was lost Jesus went for it, found him and then carried him on his shoulders back to home. How lucky it was to travel on the shoulders of Jesus!”

The explanation of the child gave back some relief to the Catechism teacher. Yes there are smart children these days, even attention seeking children too...

Lost sheep reminds us of the wrong choice taken by the individuals against God. Going against God is a tendency of the human being from the time immemorial. Even the word EGO is all about that. Someone gave this explanation:  EGO=Edging G od Out.

Hindu scriptures mention God as ‘Ananda’ (Bliss/Joy), meaning Joy. Moving away from God/Ananda means we are succumbing to ego and then to suffering and misery, the state in which the lost sheep went into.

Think always about our steps. Are we moving towards EGO/ misery, or are we on the right path To God, to Ananda/Joy?
