Thursday of the Psalter week 2

1 John 4:19 -- 5:4;

Psalm 72:2, 14-15, 17;

Gospel LK 4:14-22

Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news of him spread throughout the whole region. He taught in their synagogues and was praised by all. He came to Nazareth, where he had grown up, and went according to his custom into the synagogue on the sabbath day. He stood up to read and was handed a scroll of the prophet Isaiah. He unrolled the scroll and found the passage where it was written: The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord.

Rolling up the scroll, he handed it back to the attendant and sat down, and the eyes of all in the synagogue looked intently at him. He said to them, "Today this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing."  And all spoke highly of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth.

To be the Good News

In the synagogue of Nazareth Jesus reads out his mission from the book of Isaiah. He is anointed by the spirit “to bring good news to the poor, to proclaim liberty to captives and sight to the blind; to free the oppressed and to announce the Lord’s year of mercy.” Throughout his life we see that he fulfilled that mission.

Let us not forget that we who are baptized in him are filled with the Spirit of God, the Spirit of Jesus Christ. The Spirit should do in us what he did in Jesus: bring good news to the poor. It means that wherever we find any human being not fully living up to her/his human dignity, that wherever we find a fellow human being dehumanized, we should help him/her to be fully living, whatever the reason for dehumanization may be: psychological, spiritual, physical, medical, economic or cultural.

We should be like him, as far as we can, helping, enlightening and uplifting. According to Jesus we will be judged on what we did. In the end he will say: “There was a human being who was hungry. You could easily have helped. What did you do? There were others who were in prison physically, mentally, spiritually, economically and so on. What did you do?”

In the first reading John warns us, “If you say, ”I love God’’ while you hate your brother or sister, you are  a lair. How can you love God whom you do not see, if you do not love your brother whom you see?”
